QuestionAnswer
How many retrieves should I throw for my retriever or spaniel puppy?4 or 5 per lesson, 2 lessons per week. That's 8 - 10 TOTAL throws in a week. Where you should do this retrieving lesson is some where like a hall way, with doors closed, and carpeting so the pup don't slip on a slick floor or rug while trying to make a retrieve. Where ever you do the retrieving you have to do it in an area where the pup HAS TO RUN BACK TO YOU. If you get to the point where the pup runs off with the retrieve, STOP throwing and teach the yard lessons (your foundation work) heel, sit, stay, and come.
During a training session, I'm having trouble getting my dog to resume hunting with a strong cast after bringing his second bird. What can I do to help get him going?
Try leaving the dog sitting there, step off to the side about 5 steps and call the dog across, using his momentum coming towards you to help him continue on past with the next cast.
What breed of hunting dog is best for pheasant hunting? It would depend a great deal on the cover you intend to hunt in. As well as your own personal choice on breed of dogs. If you intend hunt in areas where the cover is fairly heavy or very heavy on small pieces of ground, in my opinion an English Springer Spaniel.
