Hal,

Its been a long time, ten years since I bought and had Dakota trained by you. She has been an outstanding bird dog/companion. However she has grown old and lost a little mobility in the field but she still has the hunting heart. She has hunted pheasant, grouse and woodcock and even flushed a turkey once. She has had several emergency trips to the vet for hunting injuries that were caused by her desire to pursue her quarry. I have an endless amount of memories that were created by following her in the field. But I notice that after our last hunt Wed she has came up lame in her rear-end hopefully its minor and will pass but I have to face the fact that it time to consider a new hunting partner because her desire to hunt would end up killing her and its time for her to retire. I have been reading and doing my homework on buying a pointing lab, and I would like to have you train him. I also am giving thought to going with a started dog. I know you breed spaniel but is there a breeder you could recommend for the lab?

Well again thank you for a job well done with Dakota she has and is awesome and the next pooch will have a lot to live up to.

Sincerely,

Michael Chivers

Hal,
Happy New Year!  Here are some pictures of the pups hunting chukar.  They have also hunted quail and pheasant.  We are extremely pleased at their progress.  Both are doing very well.  Steve says they are the best hunting dogs he’s seen.  We are having a ball with them!  Have a great new year and thanks again

Hal,

I ran across your website and was happy to see you are still breeding field springers.
My husband Larry and I bought a pup from you 14 years ago, one of Bonnie’s litter.  I remember your daughter nicknamed her Crybaby.  We call her Maggie and she has been a joy to have these 14 years. Sadly this will be her last Christmas as her health is failing and her time is limited.

I’m assuming you’re still breeding pups and was curious if there is a lineage similar to Maggie’s that might be available in the near future.

We’ve learned springers are a special breed and although bundles of energy (to put it mildly) as youngsters, but the best natured, happy dogs for our family.

Happy Holidays and if you ever need a testimonial to your pups, we’d be happy to give one.

Hello Hal,

Hope every thing is good with you. Have a little spare time so thought would I write a note. I just wish you could see how Blazer works on retrieving Ducks. Last week I went hunting with a guy and his son who has property along a big lake. We killed 13 ducks in about 1&1/2 hrs. Blazer retrieved all with out any mistakes. We had as many as 6 down at once. The wind had drifted some out past 100 yards  before he got them. He hit the water just as hard on the last duck as he did on the first one. On the last one I had to give him a pip on whistle and a arm single, he turned on a dime and went right to it.He responds great on land or water to hand singles, whistle or vocal.

I thought I would have a fair to good dog when I got him but never thought I would ever have a dog as great as he is. I think he is as good or better than 95% of Labs on Ducks. The people I hunt with can't believe it when they see him work. I must have got the best dog of the litter. Did the one you kept turn out good also? Blazer has so much drive and enthusiasm whether it is going Duck,Dove, Quail, pheasant or just going out to get the newspaper. I don't think some one who don't know much about training or isn't retired like me could ever harness his drive.

I haven't been Peasant hunting with him as much as I would have liked, You probably know as we get older we don't like the long drives and the walking as much. I am 75 years old today. I used to hunt Iowa a lot north of Sigourney around What Cheer and Millersburg. It is a much shorter drive from here but with the  hunting pressure now it is hard to find a place that isn't shot out.

Have a merry Christmas and keep them Springer's a running.

Hal,

In 2001 we purchased a female Springer from you.  Her name is Zoey.  I have to tell you she is the best hunting dog I've ever had. Her drive to retrieve and find bird is incredible. I've never seen this drive in any other dog. Also, she is the best family companion we've ever had.  I have 2 daughters 10 and 12 and they love Zoey.

Anyway,do you have any labs that are field bred or know of any reputable breeders.  I've been so impressed with Zoey that I trust your suggestions.

Hal,

I wanted to give you an update on the pups.  It is hard to believe they are 6 months old now.  Both boys are strong, smart, and full of energy!  Steve has been working with them in the field for a while now.  They show a lot of potential – great noses, they are not afraid of anything, and both are very eager to please.  They are so much fun to work with!  I am sending a picture so you can see how handsome they are.

Thanks.

Hal,

Don’t know if you remember me or not, my wife son and myself bought a pup from you in 96’. Turned out to be the hands down best bird dog I’ve ever had. We were wondering is you were going to have any litters coming up. We would probably end up driving from Michigan again, instead of shipping it. “Shelby” is going to be 11, and hunts like a 3 yr old. No arthritis, and eyes as clear as a bell.

Thanks a lot.

Hello Hal,

Blazer finally got to retrieve his first Goose. We were hunting at a big clay pit lake with steep brushy banks. He swam out got it drug it up the bank though the brush. After getting in the open he picked it up and carried it about a 100yds to the truck, The Goose weighed 10 lbs so I'm  sending you a couple of pictures I took after we got home because I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it.

My old Springer died last week so Blazer is top dog now, don't think he minds that but he kinda acts like he misses the old Dog.

Hope you are well and doing good, maybe next year I can plan a Pheasant hunt up your way and stop by and see you. I am really proud of Blazer, he is a great all around dog. Wish I could send you some business but this used to be great Quail country and everyone still want pointing dogs even though the Quail have all but disappeared.

Talk later, Dale

Hal,

I was wondering if I could still register Zoe...I haven't received her papers and I mailed it in last year...should I resend.

By the way...this is Kaleigh and Zoe...She has been a wonderful dog!

Thanks Hal

Tim

Have a good Holiday season, and best wishes for the new year.

Lucy is doing wonderfully.  Too bad the season is almost over.

Hal,

It has been a while since I last touched base with you on the progress of the pup I bought from you on May 1st of this year.  Little Miss Abby is now 5 1/2 months old and is progressing very nicely in her training.  The pup is very quick to learn and has possesses much more athletic ability than did my former Springer.  This pup is high octane.  Miss Abby had some early medical problems with loose rear leg kneecaps.  They were occasionally popping out of place.  The vet indicated that if the condition deteriorated then corrective surgery would be possible.  But good news!!!! Continued exercise and lots of swimming have strengthened the surrounding leg/knee muscles to where this isn't a problem at this point in time.  Here is a brief rundown on some of her training progress.  I do not use an electronic collar.

Introduction to gunfire went very well with introduction to .410 shotgun this weekend.
Hups on command, whistle, and hand signal.
Recalls on the whistle like a freight train.
Retrieves to hand.  Both canvas and dead/live Chuckars.
Heels very nicely in backyard but still needs work while in the field.
Introduction to water wasn't a problem. She swims and makes water retrieves really good and loves to go fishing with me.
Quartering is starting to show great improvement the last couple of times out in the fields.
Stay command is also improving each and every day (she likes to sneak a couple of steps now and then but is always corrected).
Introduction to retriev-r-trainer (.22 cal fired dummy) just started.  She needs work on marking the dummy while in the air.

I know I have a long way to go on her training but I thought I needed to tell you that I and my family are very much pleased with this pup.  If you ever need a reference in the northern Illinois area feel free to give my name out.  One question I have for you is that I am going out to South Dakota the first week of November pheasant hunting.  Miss Abby will be 7 months old at that time.  Do you feel that she will be to young to participate on a limited basis?  Help, I don't know what to do on this matter.

Best regards,
